On March 11, 2002 Funhog placed the Masked Bandit Letterbox at Walnut Woods
State Park in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. This riverside park is home to
the largest surviving natural stand of Black Walnut trees in North America.
The trees are truly magnificent and the existence of such a peaceful spot
so close to an urban center is a true gift.
to the Trailhead: from I-35 take exit 68. Follow the signs to Walnut Woods
State Park. Once inside the park stop at the kiosk and get a map. Then head
for the camp area visitors parking lot just beyond the park office. The
trail begins beside the restrooms.
to the Letterbox: At the first T go left. Trees will spread out right and
left. When water flows to your right watch the opposite bank for cement
wading in the waters. Stop when these reclining slabs are due North and a
trio of trees are on the South side of the trail. Walk ten more steps along
the path. The Masked Bandit lives behind a trap door just to your left in
the heart of a fallen spire. Close his door well when you leave to prevent
unwanted visitors
